Over 4.9 Million Mobile SIMs to Be Blocked in Pakistan – PTA Launches Crackdown

The federal government has officially begun the process of blocking over 4.9 million mobile SIMs across Pakistan that were issued against expired or invalid CNICs (Computerized National Identity Cards). This move follows recommendations from NADRA and a directive from the Ministry of Interior to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).
Phased Blocking of SIMs on Expired or Cancelled CNICs
According to Dawn News, the PTA will implement this action in phases, targeting SIMs registered to :
- Expired CNICs
- Cancelled CNICs
- CNICs of deceased individuals

SIMs Linked to CNICs Expired in 2017
All SIM cards registered using CNICs that expired in 2017 or earlier are scheduled to be deactivated by June 30, 2025, as part of the nationwide crackdown on invalid identity records.
Phased Schedule (2018–2025 CNICs)
Phase 1:
- CNICs expired in 2018 – SIMs blocked by July 31, 2025
- CNICs expired in 2019 – SIMs blocked by August 31, 2025
- CNICs expired in 2020 – SIMs blocked by September 30, 2025
Phase 2:
- CNICs expired in 2021 – SIMs blocked by October 31, 2025
- CNICs expired in 2022 – SIMs blocked by November 30, 2025
- CNICs expired in 2023, 2024, and 2025 – SIMs blocked by December 31, 2025

Purpose of the Action
This large-scale operation aims to improve digital identity verification, reduce the misuse of SIMs, and enhance national security. Telecom operators have been instructed to comply with the schedule and notify customers ahead of their SIM deactivation.

If your CNIC has expired, it is highly recommended to renew it through NADRA immediately and contact your mobile service provider to update your information. This will help you avoid service interruptions or permanent SIM deactivation .
